I originally was going to name these babies “caramelized onion cups” but when my husband tasted them he said they definitely taste like a vegan version of a french onion dip! I haven’t had french onion dip since I went plant based 2 years ago but when I tasted it I agreed 100%. It is certainly similar. I was sold on the name for sure. The filling is tangy and creamy just like french onion dip but no soaking of cashews or blending involved! Just good ol’ vegan cream cheese. I’m pretty sure the majority of my appetizers on this blog are vegan cream cheese based (Have you checked out our 2-Ingredient Cream Cheese Dips or our Holiday Wreath Appetizer?) but COME ONNNN it may be the most versatile food on the planet. And so cheap!
These french onion dip cups are perfect for any holiday dinner party or potluck AND they are also:
- dairy free
- easy to make
- simple ingredients
This appetizer also involves cooking with wine. Which is a huge win because you only need just a splash for this recipe. Clearly you can’t let the rest of that bottle go to waste! You’re welcome 😉
My favorite tool ever while shopping for wine is Barnivore.com. Who knew wine couldn’t be vegan? Well don’t bother looking it up if you want to keep your appetite. Trust my word and use Barnivore. All you do while you’re browsing your wine aisle is type in the wine’s name and it will simply tell you if it is vegan friendly or not. Stay away from all those cheap & popular brands (like Barefoot) as I’ve found they are all not vegan friendly.
Of course you can make this as a dip but if you want to follow the recipe you will need to find mini fillo shell cups. I found these at my local grocery store (kroger) in the frozen section next to the cakes and pie crusts. They say vegan right on the box. Score! I love how elegant they look with the curvy edges.
This can easily be made a few days beforehand as it just gets better as it sits. Simply make the dip and let it sit in the fridge. On the day of your party just spoon into your fillo cups and top with extra thyme or green onion. One less thing to do on Christmas or is a huge win.
4 ounces (half the container) of vegan cream cheese, softened (I used tofutti brand but kite hill is my favorite!)
2 tablespoon dairy-free butter (I used earth balance)
1 small white onion
splash of white wine
2 tablespoon dijon mustard
mini fillo shell cups
fresh or dried thyme
- In a saucepan on medium heat, add your butter, chopped onions and a few sprigs of fresh thyme. Saute until onions are soft translucent.
- Add a splash (a few tablespoons) of white wine and mustard and simmer until wine is reduced.
- To your food processor or blender add your softened cream cheese and your saucepan mixture. Pulse until well combined and onions are incorporated.
- Spoon mixture into fillo cups and serve.
